During your portrait session, every photographer wants you to feel like you’re having a fun, relaxing time. With these tips preparing for your family photo session can be a fun experience and you can rest assured that you will be prepared to create the best session possible.
Getting Ready
You always want your family to look their best for a family photo shoot. After all, these are keepsake photos that you can admire forever. Here are a few things to remember when getting ready for your session:
- Be sure to schedule nail, hair, makeup, and any other appointments you may need before your shoot.
- Take some time a few days prior to plan out your outfits. Try to find one outfit and coordinate a few colors to match slightly, but not completely! We want everyone to stand out in their own way. Get that stress out of the way early so you can focus on being relaxed and excited.
- Prepare your props and imagery if you wish to include any. Many families like to incorporate family mementos into their photos such as special jewelry, stuffed animals, hobby-related items, and keepsakes to make their photos more unique.
- Make sure you are healthy and happy! Get a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast, and get excited for an amazing shoot!
How To Dress
Finding the right outfits can be the hardest part of any photo shoot. The most important thing to remember is to dress for the weather! You want you and your family to be comfortable, cozy, and easy to move in. It is also important to think of what colors you want to wear. You want to pop in your photos, right? We love to encourage some fun patterns and a cohesive color scheme of a few colors. That way everyone in your family can stand out in their own way. You should also take your environment into consideration. If you’re doing a photo shoot at the beach, try to wear vibrant colors to really stand out! In doing so, try to stray away from any writing on shirts that may distract from the focal point – your family! However, accessories are always a plus, and are highly encouraged! Bowties, props, scarves, and the like make your photos fun without being cheesy.
What To Bring
If you are planning an outdoor photo shoot, the weather can affect any makeup you have on, so remember to bring any touch-ups you may need. It is also important to make sure you are prepared for your little ones (if you have them) to get hungry. Snacks are a must and can help with distracting kiddos to get the perfect shot. Just make sure they won’t stain any fingers or clothing! If they do, remember to bring a change of clothes for your family in case anyone gets dirty. Photographing children in the surroundings make for adorable photography, and getting the perfect shot is always a great feeling. However, no one wants wet clothes or muddy socks for the car ride home.
