The Best Time To Book Your Maternity Shoot

Pregnancy can be one of the most exciting journeys of your life. Everyday is filled with new experiences, new worries, and new changes. However, it can also pass quickly, and before you know it you’re getting to hold your new little one as you welcome them to the world. What’s what makes photography sessions such a good idea – it allows you to capture your journey before your baby has arrived. They allow you to look back on your amazing journey and even show your little one when they’re older. If you’re looking to plan a session for your pregnancy journey, here is some advice on the best time to book your maternity shoot.

How Far Along Should I Be For My Maternity Photos?

Most photographers recommend scheduling a maternity photo session within 28 to 36 weeks of your pregnancy. This would be between the beginning of your seventh month, but not quite the end of your eighth. During this time, the parent is still feeling relaxed enough to stand and pose for their shoot without feeling too fatigued or uncomfortable. It also is late enough that you can show off your big round baby bump!

What If I’m Having Twins/Triplets Or Are Due Early?

Everyone’s journey is different, and we understand that! Although 28 to 36 weeks is recommended, it is just that – a recommendation! If you are having multiple babies, you will be able to have your maternity shoot a little earlier and still be able to show off your baby bump. This can allow you a window of 17 to 36 weeks to have those photos taken.

Having your maternity session early can also be preferred if you are expecting to use photos for your announcement. Because of turnaround times, it may be best to schedule your shoot earlier to ensure those photos are ready for your big news!

When Should I Book My Appointment?

You know your time frame to take your photos, but when do you book your session? We recommend booking your session between 12 and 20 weeks. Things happen, and sometimes you have have little flexibility in your schedule. Securing the right date early on can give you and your photographer plenty of time to plan your shoot to your liking.

How Should I Prepare For My Session?

Your date is booked and you’re feeling great – it’s time to start preparing what you’re going to wear to your photo shoot. The style and color of your clothes have a big impact on the overall look and feel of your photographs. However, it is most important to feel comfortable. Remember to pamper yourself as well! Visiting a hair stylist or getting your makeup done can help you feel good before your shoot.

Also, don’t be afraid to bring more than one outfit! Try going for something more sensible like a simple dress or even a wrap for flow, intimate photos. If you’re feeling fancy, a formal dress of any color can really make your photos pop! If you’re focused on color, a simple color will make a big statement and keep the focus on you and your bump, no matter the scenery. Neutrals like all black or white will work great; or go a nude color to match your skin tone.

In addition, it is always fun to bring a few props for your photo session. These can be anything sentimental that you would want included. A few examples would include: your ultrasound photos, a family heirloom, a blanket for your new baby, or any other object that will incorporate a special touch to your photos.
